Coxsackie NY Homes for Sale at 2-4 Mansion St Coxsackie NY

Here’s a two-for-one special like no other: Conjoined twin brick townhouses built in 1825, located upstate in the historic Greene County village of Coxsackie.

The Federal-style houses at 2-4 Mansion Street contain a host of original details including six chimneys (which means a whole bunch of fireplaces), antique windows, slate roofing, newel posts, pocket doors, intricate moldings and mantels. An interior size of 3,000 square feet and six bedrooms makes this one spacious riverside house on the Hudson. The asking price is $280,000.

These two architectural gems in Coxsackie’s Historic District are said to have housed boat captains when this part of the Hudson River was the main shipping route.

They are the most “architecturally significant” houses in the area and have hardly been touched since that bygone era, according to the listing.

Note: As far as we can tell, the attached two-story house with the flat roof at left in the exterior photo above is not included in the sale.

The photos reveal a wealth of architectural detail, all of it in good condition and most likely built for a fairly wealthy homeowner.

Some of the details here are reminiscent of another house in upstate New York, this one in the city of Newburgh. The Captain David Crawford House, which houses the city’s historical society and was featured on the Newburgh Candlelight Tour, is a mix of High Federal and Greek Revival style. It was built in 1830 and features tall chimneys like the Coxsackie house.

There are also whispers of the Greek Revival style in these houses, such as the bay window with Greek pillar pictured below.

The property will probably need a careful restoration from someone who knows their way around historic properties. Along with the townhouses comes over a half-acre’s worth of land in the heart of the village, overlooking the Hudson River.

There are no shortage of old houses in the Hudson Valley, but two houses of this age and style joined together to make one spectacular property is unusual, indeed.

About Coxsackie: One of the Hudson Valley’s better-kept secrets, Coxsackie is located on the western shores of the Hudson River, 20 minutes north of Catskill, 25 minutes from Hudson and about three hours from Brooklyn. It’s a quiet, idyllic village bursting with vintage Victorian, Colonial and Federal homes, as well as a picturesque waterfront park and boat launch.

  1. One Word: Ghosts!

But seriously, you really could get the historical renovation bug out of your system with these two. What a beautiful canvas to start with. A renovation of that caliber would be quite expensive though. And even though $280k sounds like a giveaway or a BOGO in this case, the money needed to get this in the shape everyone is envisioning would be quite a pretty penny.
